As I prepare to attend the Plug In Indie Music Expo tomorrow at Minglewood, I thought it would be only right to share a few tips I follow to make networking easy.
Though some may consider it a fine art, it's rather easy. Just follow these simple steps:
Know Your Audience
Now this may not always be possible, because some networking opportunities just happen, but if you know you are going to a specific expo or event, prepare yourself. Find out who or what companies will be there so that you can ask the right questions and meet the right people. If you know Mr. X from company 123 is going to be there, familiarize yourself with his achievements prior to so that you will know what to talk about when you meet him!
Take It All In
Meaning enter the building and become aware of your surroundings. Scope out the place and see who you know and who you might want to get to know.
Don't be shy, people wouldn't be there if they didn't expect you to talk to them. If this is too forward for the shy at heart, approach a group, or listen in on an informative dialogue. Be assertive yet warm and shake hands when appropriate.
Just as you would not approach someone who looks uninterested, the same goes for you. Make yourself visible and engaging. When you are approached or when you approach someone, be considerate and welcoming. You want to leave a positive and vivid picture of your character with those you meet.
Have business cards and or marketing material readily available to hand out to those you meet.
Remember, these are just a few suggestions for better networking. Always be yourself and never miss an opportunity to show who you are!
Stay fabulous and stay tuned for updates on my adventures at the Plug In Indie Music Expo!
